Denethor (John Noble) at Gondor
First Appearance: "The Two Towers"
The last Steward of Gondor. Upon hearing of Boromir's death, he
sank into an irreversible depression. He was cheered slightly when
Pippin arrived, swore fealty, and was made Swortdthain of Gondor,
but it was no use. When Faramir returned, injured, from Osgiliath,
Denethor ordered the two of them to be burned on the pyre. Gandalf,
Pippin, and the soldier Beregond appeared at the last minute and
saved Faramir from being burned alive. However, Denethor promptly
committed suicide. |

Rank: White Lady of Ithilien
Éowyn (Miranda Otto) at Gondor
First Appearance: "The Two Towers"
She met and fell in love with Aragorn before the War of the Ring,
but her love remained unrequited. When Theoden and his armies rode
to Gondor, she disguised herself as Dernhelm the soldier and rode
with them, sneaking Merry along, too. She was responsible for the
death of the Witch-King, though she sustained a grave injury from
the black breath. While recovering in the Houses of Healing at Gondor,
she met Faramir, to whom she was later married. She became the White
Lady of Ithilien and bore one child, Elboron. |

Faramir (David Wenham) at Gondor
First Appearance: "The Two Towers"
He was relatively passive by nature, which bothered his father,
but he was a brave soldier in combat. He was badly injured by the
Nazgûl when retreating from Osgiliath to Minas Tirith, and was very
nearly burned alive by his deranged father. After being saved by
Gandalf, he was taken to the Houses of Healing, where he met and
fell in love with Ëowyn. They were later married. |

Rank: King
Theoden (Bernard Hill) at Pelennor Fields
First Appearance: "The Two Towers"
King of Rohan. Most of his reign found him rendered helpless and
decrepit under the spell of Saruman. The wizard's faithful servant,
Grima Wormtongue, served as his "advisor", instructing him on the
matters of the kingdom. The spell was broken with the arrival of
Gandalf, after which the king assembled his forces and rode to Gondor
to fight at the Battle of Pelennor Fields. He died when the Witch-King
of Angmar frightened his horse into throwing him off, where he hit
his head on a stone. Following his death, Eomer took the throne
of Rohan. |
