Personal History:
Leonard H. McCoy was born in 2227. He entered the University of
Mississippi on Earth in 2245 to pursue a career in medicine. While
at university, McCoy developed an impressive procedure for the
creation of axonal pathways between grafted neural tissue and basal
ganglia. This procedure was later incorporated into Starfleet
database for the Emergency Medical Holographic program in the late
24th century.
In 2253, McCoy graduated medical school. Earlier on in his career,
McCoy’s father was struck down with a terrible illness. McCoy
compassionately ended his father's life while being faced with the
prospect of his father suffering a painful death. The cure for
disease his father suffered with, was discovered shortly afterwards.
McCoy carried the guilt for his father's death for many years.
In 2266, McCoy was assigned to duty aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise as
ship's chief medical officer. He replaced Dr. Piper.
As of 2267, McCoy had earned the Legion of Honour, as well as been
decorated by Starfleet surgeons. McCoy suffered a severe overdose of
cordrazine in a shipboard incident in 2267. In the paranoid
delusions that followed, McCoy fled the ship. He then jumped through
a time portal being studied by Enterprise personnel.
In 2268, McCoy was diagnosed with terminal Xenopolycythemia. He
chose to resign from Starfleet so that he could marry a woman named
Natira, the high priestess of the Yonadan people. McCoy rejoined
Starfleet after the cure was found in the Yonadan memory banks.
McCoy retired from Starfleet after the Enterprise returned from its
five-year mission in 2270. He then entered into a private medical
practice. In 2271, McCoy returned to Starfleet at Kirk's request
when the ship intercepted the V'Ger entity near Earth. In 2277,
McCoy was promoted to Commander.
Before the death of Captain Spock in 2285 as he sacrificed himself
to save the Enterprise. Spock also implanted McCoy with his katra,
or his living soul. In the same year, the Vulcan High Priestess
T'Lar presided over the ancient fal-tor-pan ceremony. She refused
Spock's katra, which was residing in McCoy's mind, with Spock's
body, recovered from the Genesis Planet.
In 2293, along with Kirk, McCoy was wrongly convicted of the murder
of Klingon Chancellor Gorkon, a conviction that was later
overturned. McCoy was scheduled to retire shortly after the Khitomer
peace conference, but he either changed his mind, or later returned
to Starfleet. As a retired Starfleet admiral, McCoy made an
inspection tour of the Enterprise-D in 2364 at the age of 137.
