Personal History:
The Emergency Medical Hologram was developed at Starfleet's Jupiter Station. The EMH was designed by Dr. Lewis Zimmerman. The Sovereign-class Starship Enterprise-E, launched in 2372, was also equipped with an EMH. Chief medical officer. Dr. Beverly Crusher was not fond of the EMH program, however he proved quite useful in the protection of the ship's medical staff during the Borg invasion (2373).
The EMH became the only source of medical treatment for the crew, after the medical staff of the U.S.S. Voyager were killed (2371) during the rough passage into the Delta Quadrant.
The EMH has been programmed with over five million different treatments, with adaptive programs and probability options. He is programmed with data from 2,000 medical references and holds the experience of 47 physicians. The EMH program was first activated on Stardate 48308 and consisted of more than fifty million gigaquads of information, from more than three thousand cultures. Shortly after Stardate 48532, when Neelix's lungs were removed, the Doctor was able to save his life by devising a means of creating a pair of holographic lungs, using the holo-emitters in sick bay.
The EMH is definitely capable of independent thought, as in 2372 he refused a direct order to separate Tuvix into Tuvok and Neelix. He did so because obeying the order would have required him to take a life, therefore violating his doctor's oath to do no harm.
The EMH found it frustrating to be treated as an lifeless computer program by members of the crew. Captain Janeway ordered that the Doctor be given control over his deactivation, in order to avoid the indignity of being deactivated by others. The Doctor's role as chief medical officer on the ship caused the EMH to undergo significant growth as a sentient life-form.
One of his early steps in his growth was to search for a name for himself. The names he considered included Benjamin Spock and Jonas Salk. Danara Pel, a Vidiian physician named him Shmullus after her uncle. The Doctor was also sensitive to criticisms that, as an artificial life-form, he would have difficulty with comforting the suffering of a patient. To address this issue, he programmed himself with a simulation of a 29-hour Levodian flu so that he could experience illness himself.
The Doctor completed his first away mission on Stardate 48693. His mission was to go to the ship's holodeck to investigate the disappearance of Ensign Kim, Commander Chakotay and Lieutenant Tuvok. He was successful in interacting with a photonic being that had taken up residence on the Holodeck, and the returning of the missing crew. His actions on the mission earned him a special commendation from Captain Janeway.
On Stardate 48892, a surge of kinoplastic radiation caused a malfunction in Voyager's Holodeck circuits. This led the Doctor in a delusional reality in which he believed he was a real person named Lewis Zimmerman. In this fantasy, the Doctor imagined he was married to a human woman named Kes Zimmerman.
The Doctor was designed as a short-term supplement for medical personnel, and not to be activated for over 1,500 hours. A level-4 memory fragmentation was caused then this limit was exceeded on Stardate 505252.3. The memory fragmentation resulted in rapid deterioration of program operation. Not wanting to lose everything that the doctor had become, and to re-initialise the Doctor, the crew decided to combine the Doctor's program with the Jupiter station EMH diagnostic program. The matrix overlay process worked to maintain the integrity of the Doctor, but his memory has not been restored completely.
When the Voyager visited Earth's past of 1996, Henry Starling was able to captured the Doctor and fit him with an autonomous holo-emitter. This holo-emitter gave the Doctor freedom of being able to leave sickbay and still exist.
The Doctors first planetary mission came on Stardate 50425.1 to a mining colony, Garan, where the Doctor uncovered a new life-form. This new life-form was a virus that was able to exist only in the macroscopic world. The life-form infected the entire Voyager crew until the Doctor was able to develop an antigen which destroyed the macrovirus.
In 2373 the Doctor programmed a holographic family for himself. His family was a wife, Charlene, with two children, Jeffrey and Belle. During this program, his daughter Belle was killed during a game of Parrises Squares and the doctor was unable to save her.
As of 2374, the Doctor is still aboard the U.S.S. Voyager.
