Personal History
Julian Bashir was born in 2341, the only child of Richard & Amsha Bashir. At the age of 7, Julian was genetically enhanced by his parents request due to his struggling in school and not advancing at same rate as others children his age. Until the age of 15, Julian was unaware of his enhanced status. Due to his increased mental abilities, along with improvements in coordination, and height, Julian decided to attend Starfleet Academy and become a doctor of multi-species medicine.
Julian’s decision to become a doctor stemmed from an event when he was only a child of ten years. He and his father were caught in an ionic storm on Ivernia II when they ran across a young Ivrenian girl who was severely injured. His father went to find help, but he was too late and the girl died. To Julian's horror, he later learned that a nearby plant could have saved that girl's life, but he had no knowledge of it. This triggered his decision to choose medicine.
After 8 years of studying, Julian graduated from the Academy second in his class. He missed the top berth by incorrectly identifying the pre-ganglionic fibre on his final oral exam. After graduating Julian opted for a post at Deep Space Nine, one of the Federation's most far flung outposts. Here not only would he encounter many different species and challenges to keep him occupied, but he would remain far from his parents.
With Julian's decision to join Starfleet came the loss of the woman he had intended to marry, a ballerina he met while studying in Paris. His future father-in-law offered him a job at a Paris hospital, but Julian declined due to the lure of alien medicine was intriguing. He later expressed remorse over this choice and began to wonder if he could have had a career as well as a wife.
Julian was Captain of the Academy Racquetball team during his years as a student and had dreamed of following tennis as his career until finally settling on medicine instead.
While at the Academy, Julian's also racked up quite a few credits with the women as well. They were drawn to his dark good looks, but he had yet learned how to talk to a woman. This was a problem that continued for years after he arrived at DS9.
During his six years on Deep Space Nine, Julian progressed from an arrogant, talented, wet-behind-the-ears Starfleet graduate to a seasoned, although sometimes arrogant, compassionate Starfleet officer. Julian pursued Jadzia Dax in vain for years, until he eventually got the message and opted for a friendship instead of romance. A relationship with Melora, an Elasian Starfleet scientist, was short lived when she decided to return to her home planet in order to be with her family. Julian also had a brief relationship with Leeta, a Dabo girl at Quark's. That relationship broke up amicably when she expressed her desire for Rom, Quark's brother.
Although romance has yet to cast a kind eye onto Julian, he is known to be a devoted friend to both Garak, an ex-Cardassian spy-turned-tailor, and Miles O'Brien, the Chief Engineer of DS9.
Julian has the individual distinction of being impersonated by a Changeling twice since the Federation first came in contact with the Dominion. He spent several weeks in a Dominion prison colony while his Changeling counterpart integrated himself into the fabric of DS9 and destroyed an attempt to halt the Dominion. This experience has made him something of an expert on this hostile race. It also, however makes him the first target whenever a Changeling is suspected of being on DS9.
Julian is considered one of the best doctors in the Federation, and he has proved his expertise numerous times. These included keeping Vedek Bareil alive long enough to negotiate with the Cardassians during a crucial time in Bajoran history. He removed an implant from Garak's brain which was causing him to go insane. Julian was also able to find a vaccine for unborn children of a race that suffer from a "quickening disease"
